Cookies Policy

Introduction

This policy explains how Stephen John Lawyers (we, us) uses cookies on our website. It explains the types of cookies we use and why, and also how you can change your cookie preferences.

You should read this cookie policy alongside our Privacy Notice, which provides details as to how your personal data is used and processed by us.

What are cookies?

Cookies are text files containing small amounts of information which are downloaded to your device (e.g. computer, mobile phone etc) when you visit a website. Cookies are then sent back to the originating web domain on your subsequent visits to that domain. Most web pages contain elements from multiple web domains so when you visit stephenjohnlawyers.com.au your browser may receive cookies from several sources.

Cookies are useful because they allow a website to recognise a user’s device. They allow you to navigate between web pages efficiently, remember preferences and analyse how you use websites and online services. They can also be used to tailor advertising to your interests through tracking your browsing across websites.

Why do we use cookies?

We use cookies for various purposes, such as to:

  • analyse trends;
  • administer services;
  • remember your preferences;
  • track users’ movements around our website;
  • gather demographic information about our user base as a whole;
  • enable you to navigate between webpages more efficiently;
  • help us understand how our website is used so we can improve it; and
  • record information about your visit to help target advertising and to build a profile of you.

The purpose for each cookie we use is set out below.

What types of cookies does Stephen John Lawyers use and how long will they stay on my device?

We use the following types of cookies: necessary cookies; analytics cookies; website functionality cookies; and advertising cookies. Each type of cookie has a different purpose, as described further below.

  • Some cookies are set by us (known as first-party cookies).
  • Other cookies are set by another organisation’s website (known as third-party cookies). For third-party cookies, we do not have access or control over these technologies. We do not tie the information gathered by third parties to our customers’ or users’ personal information.
  • A cookie can either be a session cookie or a persistent cookie. A session cookie is stored temporarily on your computer or device while you use the website, and is deleted when you close your internet browser. A persistent cookie remains on your computer or device after you have closed your browser, so we can remember if you have visited our website before or your preferences. The period of time a persistent cookie stays on your computer or device is set out below.

Necessary cookies

These cookies are essential in order to enable you to move around the website and use its features. Without these cookies, services you have asked for (such as navigating between pages) cannot be provided.

Analytics cookies

We make use of analytics cookies to analyse how our visitors use our websites and to monitor website performance. This allows us to provide a high quality experience by customising our offering and quickly identifying and fixing any issues that arise. For example, we might use analytics cookies to keep track of which pages are most popular, which method of linking between pages is most effective, and to determine why some pages are receiving error messages. The information collected by these cookies is not associated with your personal information by us or by our contractors.

Website functionality cookies

We make use of cookies to provide you with certain functionality. For example, to remember choices you make (such as your user name, language or the region you are in), or to recognise the platform from which you access the site, and to provide enhanced and more personal features. These cookies are not used to track your browsing on other sites.

Advertising cookies

Advertising cookies record information about your visit to our website to help target advertising and to build a profile of you. For example, the pages you have visited, the links you have followed, the number of times you’ve seen an ad, the ads you have clicked on and your browsing habits and interests. They are used by services provided by third parties, such as Like or Share buttons. The AddThis cookies mentioned above are also examples of advertising cookies. Third parties provide these services in return for recognising that you have visited our website. When you use the LinkedIn, Twitter or the other share buttons available, you will be directed to a page controlled by those companies which may place cookies (including targeting cookies) and will be subject to LinkedIn’s, Twitter’s or the relevant other website’s cookies policies respectively.

Disabling cookies

If you do not agree to the use of cookies please disable them by following the instructions for your browser set out here or use the automated disabling tool where available. However, some of the services will not function so well if cookies are disabled.
Where the organisation setting the cookie provides an automated disabling tool in respect of its cookie(s) we list the name of that organisation, the category of cookies it sets, the cookie type (either session or persistent and the duration details for persistent cookies) together with a link to its automated disabling tool. In all other cases, we list the names of the cookies themselves, their source at the date of this Cookies policy and the cookie type so that you can easily identify and disable them if you want through your browser controls.

Use of IP addresses and web logs

We may also use your IP address and browser type to help diagnose problems with our server, to administer our website and to improve the service we offer to you. An IP address is a numeric code that identifies your computer on the internet. Your IP address might also be used to gather broad demographic information.

We may perform IP lookups to determine which domain you are coming from (e.g. google.com) to more accurately gauge our users’ demographics.

Information from these types of cookies and technologies is not combined with information about you from any other source and will not personally identify you.

HTML email web beacons and webinars

Our marketing-related emails contain a single, campaign-unique “web beacon pixel” to tell us whether our emails are opened and combined with other technology and to verify any clicks through to links within the email. We may use this information for purposes including determining which of our emails are more interesting to you and to query whether users who do not open our emails wish to continue receiving them. The pixel will be deleted when you delete the email. If you do not wish the pixel to be downloaded to your device, you should choose not to click links that we send you. This information may be connected to your personal identity.

Where you subscribe to our webinar service, the accompanying emails similarly include a pixel. We track your interaction with these emails and our webinars to validate attendance for accreditation purposes and to help determine which information is of interest to you as described above.

Third-party websites

Please note that this Cookies policy does not apply to, and we are not responsible for, the privacy practices of third-party websites, which may be linked to or accessible through this website.

Changes to the Cookies policy

We may update this Cookies policy and we would encourage you to review the policy from time to time to stay informed of how we are using cookies. This Cookies policy was last updated in March 2023.
